A1 REAR SIGHT (27/09/2017)
The infamous A1 sight. These have been extremely hard to get a hold of since they were discontinued by every manufacturer. Here is your chance to get a new one that I believe is a perfect copy of the original Colt. They look more dark greyish like the original color than black color which is listed above. This is a good buy for your retro build and a good deal. These are new quality and fantastic. Don't purchase surplus junk and get burned.
Good, affordable replacement parts (27/10/2017)
I got this kit for an old bushmaster A1 up per I have. The rear sight sitting on it was very hard to adjust and I just didn't shoot it much. With how cheap this kit is I decided it was time for an upgrade. The parts are all new but with mine the finish on the screw and the internal threads in the sight seem to have not taken well and rusted. When I initially installed it I had to turn the screw driver extremely carefully and powerful. I removed it, cleaned it up with pb blaster and a brass brush, and the finish came off the screw and out of the rear sight. Cleaned that off with gun scrubber and then I sprayed some white lithium on both pieces and reinstalled and they went in much easier and now I can adjust the sight very easily. I would definitely bit it again but would clean the parts off first. I may have just gotten a lemon but I'm stilk happy with it.
junk(24/11/2017)
Bought this for my retro build and the axis screw will not thread into the aperture. The threads in the aperture are out of spec because the axis screw is fine with the other apertures I tried.
Total garbage(10/12/2017)
This is the worst product Iâve ever ordered from brownells, the screw doesnât fit the aperture correctly and requires so much force to thread that it becomes impossible, you are basically cutting the threads on the screw by assembling this sight. And after install trying to adjust for windage I broke the pin that holds the whole sight together. One would assume that a functional rear sight would adjust for windage, Iâd rather burn a $20 bill then buy this sight again.
Install difficult... read more:(04/01/2018)
As other reviews have said... it's super difficult to screw the sight in... but only the first time. This is BY DESIGN because there should be no backlash or wiggle in a sight, so there is essentially no tolerance. The Aperture should "marry" to the leadscrew the first time you thread it all the way. Put the aperture in a vice (NOT IN THE RECEIVER), lube the screw and the aperture, and then thread the screw 100% into the aperture almost like you were tapping threads... go in a full turn or two and then work it back out a turn or so. This will take about 5 minutes. You'll notice that once the screw has been up into the aperture all the way, that the screw is now just barely tighter than finger-tight to turn (perfect). Use a hollow-ground flat corrected sized screwdriver or you could damage the screw slot. Once you have the screw and aperture fitting almost finger tight, install into your receiver or sight base.
I gave it 4 stars because it could be a bit easier to assemble the first time and the finish looks like it could use a bit of WD-40 to remove some very light corrosion.
Not recommended (12/02/2018)
To start, I ordered this back in september for an A1 build. I should have inspected the sight prior, but I stuck it in a draw till the uppers got in stock. Regardless, I tried to install my LuthAR rear sight assembly today on my upper. I say tried, because as I was installing it there was some major resistance in the first threads. I backed it out, but as I was the head of the screw became wallowed out. Before anybody asks, yes I was using an appropriate sized screw driver. I inspected the rear sight, and the "threads", if you want to call them that were so rough that I wondered how I even got it started in the first place. The entire threads in the sight were very rough and were not uniform at all. Aesthetically the sights are very nice, but my build will not be complete because the manufacture decided not to do a QA check and make sure the threads are clean. I have emailed LUTH AR about this. I hope the next sight set will be properly made.
Buyer beware(15/02/2018)
Much like another reviewer, I bought this sight kit and tossed it in a drawer until I needed it for the build.
The screw is horrendously tight. I almost knicked my receiver trying to tighten the thing.
If I had a tap and die the right size, I would run both the sight and screw through them and then assemble.
I'm going to basically use the screw as it's own tap with the sight itself in the bench vice (padded) and get it smoothed out then install the sight in the upper as others have done.
I won't be buying another one of these.
Perfect on a retro build (22/02/2018)
It was easy to instal. Works great on my retro 601. It works as it should easy to adjust. The only difficult part was putting the tiny pin in. I figured out if I put it in a vice and started pin before assembly into gun it was much easier. Once it was on gun I just had to tap pin into place. I bought two of these and both work as intended.
I got a good one I guess(23/02/2018)
I've read the reviews and heard about the problems with the tight screw, but I went ahead and bought one anyways, and lo and behold when it got here...it worked. I don't doubt that the other reviewers got bad ones or ones that might've had problems with the screw being at one side of the in spec range and the sight threads being at the other end of the spec range, but whoever made mine did a good job. I just figured I'd write a review since most people don't write reviews for stuff that works. It works.
TOO tight(03/03/2018)
I couldnât screw in the screw to the sight, waaaaaaay too tight. I bought a USGI and it worked fine. Donât recommend, not usable
Donât buy (22/03/2018)
After fighting with this for over an hour, and reading these reviews, I finally got it installed. The screw was almost impossible to thread all the way through the sight, I lathered it up with grease and was finally able to get it far enough in to allow the sight to be properly installed. Basically rounded off the head in the process (yes I used the correct size bit).
Itâs so tight that adjusting the sight requires vice grips and a punch. Also canât change flip the sight up or down without using a plastic punch and hammer. DO NOT BUY
No issues with this sight.(05/04/2018)
I had no issues with installing this sight assembly. If the user uses properly installation procedures, there will be no problem getting this to work with any A1 upper receiver.
The sights work well. They install easy. But the outline of the apertures do not have the same shape as an original. These sights resemble the straight shape of the A2 0-2 sights rather than the circular shape of a true A1 sight. I'm not sure I would use them if a closer match is available.
Made it work but it wasnât easy (31/05/2018)
Tried to put this on my Brownells 601 upper... but it didnât want to work... not sure if this was because the upper wasnât made right, or the flat spring wasnât made right... so without knowing I have to be nuetral...
The Flat spring curved too high, so the windage screw couldnât go through both holes.
I had to hammer the flat spring down so the curve was lower (more flat), allowing the windage screw to pass through. But it wouldnât completely pass through both holes.
I had to press down on the aperture site while I screwed the screw all the way through, so the windage screw head was flush with the upper.
Without pushing down, on the aperature site, the windage screw could not move flush against the upper, which wouldnât allow the windage drum to align with the windage screw hole to pass the detent through... anyways !!!!
Took me a while to figure this out but it finally worked.
Wouldâve rather bought one that worked, but in the end, it worked.
My advice, find one that works, or make this work... but then again, maybe itâs the upper.
EXTREMELY Tight!(17/08/2018)
Bought this to install on my Brownell 080-001-303MBÂ
BRN-16A1 M16A1 Upper Receiver Black.
First thing I noticed is that the roll pin was missing from the package. In too much of a hurry to get it installed to worry about a replacement. I've got pins, we can do this.
Second, as other reviewers have stated, the flat spring wasn't quite flat enough for my liking, making the pin a bear to get through both holes & consequentially also made the sight a pain to flip/rotate.
Third, the tolerances were so tight on the pin (head to roll pin hole) that I had to sharpen the tip of an old punch just to get the roll pin holes to align in order to install the roll pin.
Final result: it LOOKS great, but I have to use a large flathead to adjust it.
Time to tear it back down & do some minor smith work.
Nice sight, no problems(06/09/2018)
Took a gamble on this sight after reading the other reviews and won. It came with the screw threaded through the rear sight. Was snug coming out but didn't show any signs of wear along with the rest of the parts. Put the spring in the retro slickside upper and only needed mild pressure on the sight to get it low enough to get the screw through the upper. Didn't have to flatten out the spring. Inspecting, lube and installation took about ten minutes. I had none of the issues others seem to have had. Whatever the reason, I'll take it. It looks and functions great.
Aperature Windage Variance(24/09/2018)
I installed a Luth-AR rear sight assembly (No. 100-024-755WB) in a Brownells' BRN-16A1 Upper Receiver (No. 080-001-303WB) at the same time I installed a USGI salvaged assembly in a second BRN-16A1 receiver. The Luth-AR "Sight, Rear" is more A2 than A1-style. The sight threaded on the windage screw fine. It was finicky to install the screw through the receiver due to a strong spring. My low rating is based on the windage screw centerline not being perpendicular to the aperature plane. When the sight is flipped from the short range aperature to the long range aperature, windage shifts 0.0125 inches (noticeable at the receiver, likely a substantial variance at a target). In addition, the detent does not engage the windage drum precisely at all points in a full rotation - this is either a receiver or a sight issue. The USGI sight had no such problem.
